Jose Martinez was a Venezuelan professional baseball player who played as a first baseman and outfielder primarily for the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on July 25, 1988, in La Guaira, Venezuela.
Martinez began his professional baseball career in 2006 playing in the Venezuelan Summer League. He signed with the Chicago White Sox in 2009 and played in their minor league system until 2016. In 2017, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals where he had a breakout season, hitting .309 with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs in just 106 games.
Martinez continued to play for the Cardinals until the 2020 season when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. He finished his career with a .292 batting average, 82 home runs, and 305 RBIs in 695 games played.
Martinez was known for his versatility as a player, being able to play multiple positions on the field including first base, outfield, and designated hitter. He was also known for his positive attitude and leadership on and off the field.
